Why Your Skin Changes in Low Humidity, and What Actually Helps

Skin is comfortable in a fairly narrow band of humidity. Most research puts that band somewhere around 40 to 60 percent relative humidity. Desert air routinely sits below 20 percent, and on a hot, windy afternoon in the high desert it can drop into single digits.

That gap is not a small inconvenience. It changes how your skin behaves, and it explains why a routine that worked perfectly well in a coastal or temperate climate can stop working within a week of moving somewhere arid.

The mechanism: transepidermal water loss

Your skin is always losing a small amount of water to the air. The term for it is transepidermal water loss, or TEWL. It is normal and unavoidable. What changes in dry air is the rate.

Water moves from wetter places to drier places, and the size of that difference sets the speed. When the air outside your skin holds almost no moisture, the gradient steepens and water leaves the outermost layer of skin faster than the layers beneath can replace it.

The outermost layer, the stratum corneum, is not inert. It relies on water to function. The enzymes that break the bonds between dead surface cells so they can shed cleanly need moisture to work. When the layer dries out past a certain point, those enzymes slow down, cells stay stuck together in clumps, and you get visible flaking. Not because your skin is producing less oil, but because it has stopped shedding properly.

At the same time, the natural moisturizing factors inside those cells, the amino acids and sugars and salts that hold water in place, get depleted faster than they are replenished. The result is the specific set of symptoms people describe in the desert: tightness within minutes of washing, a fine papery texture, stinging when you apply products that never used to sting, and a general sense that your skin has become reactive.

The part most advice gets wrong

Search for dry climate skincare and almost every result tells you to use a hyaluronic acid serum. In a humid climate that is reasonable advice. In genuinely dry air it can work against you.

Hyaluronic acid and glycerin are humectants. They hold water, and they pull it from wherever water is available. In humid air, some of that comes from the atmosphere. In air at 15 percent humidity there is nothing to pull from above, so the humectant draws moisture up from the living tissue below, holds it at the surface, and then that water evaporates into the dry air and takes some of the skin's own with it.

This is not a reason to abandon humectants. It is a reason to never leave one as your final step. A humectant applied under something that seals, and applied to skin that is still damp so there is water present to hold, does what it is supposed to do. A humectant applied to dry skin in dry air, with nothing over it, is a slow leak.

The order matters more than the ingredient list.

What to change

Apply to damp skin. Not towel dried, damp. You are giving your products water to work with and then trapping it. This single change does more than most product swaps.

Finish with something that seals. A face oil or a richer cream as the last step, over whatever came before. Without it, everything underneath is exposed.

Cleanse less aggressively. Foaming surfactants strip the lipids that slow water loss. In dry air you cannot afford to remove them twice a day. An oil based cleanser removes sunscreen and makeup without stripping a barrier that is already under strain.

Reduce your active load. Retinoids, exfoliating acids and vitamin C all increase barrier permeability temporarily. In a humid climate the barrier recovers between uses. In dry air it may not. If your skin has become reactive since moving somewhere arid, cutting actives back to two or three nights a week is usually more effective than adding another product.

Do something about the air indoors. Evaporative cooling and forced air heating both drive indoor humidity down further. A humidifier in the room where you sleep is unglamorous and works.
