Skincare Tips for Travel

As we look towards warmer days ahead, many people are itching to get outside, book a flight, and travel to somewhere new. However, traveling can often send your skin into a frenzy, with varying elements such as humidity, exposure to germs, and even water content having the ability to shift and upset your skin’s balance. Here are a few ideas of how to safeguard your skin from travel exposure, so that all of your summer travels can be done seamlessly.

In-Flight Skincare

Airplanes are notorious for low humidity, lots of people, and stale, circulating air. For this reason, I always opt to wear a light face mask or extra moisturizer layer when flying. This can help create a barrier between your skin and pollutants, as well as increase your hydration levels. As a bonus, when you get off the flight you will look extra moisturized and glowy! Be mindful to forgo makeup on the flight, which can easily clog pores, especially when paired with increased moisture.

Consistency is Key

It can be tempting to opt for convenience when traveling, and purchasing mini skincare and beauty products is convenient compared to dealing with full-size bottles. However, breaking from your skincare routine and using new products — even for a brief period of time — can wreak havoc on the skin. Instead, pack travel-size bottles of your own skincare products, and keep to your routine as closely as possible. Consistency is a much better value than convenience!

Hydration

From changes in humidity to the circulating dry air of airports and planes, traveling is notorious for drying out the skin. It is important to stay hydrated from the inside out always, especially when traveling. Doing so can help your skin retain moisture levels and stay balanced while out of routine. Staying hydrated will also help you rebound from jetlag and avoid feeling sluggish after long travel days.

Exfoliate

Traveling exposes your skin to environmental pollutants that it might not be used to, such as free radicals caused by various types of air pollution. These can easily irritate the skin and cause inflammation, clogged pores, and acne. Exfoliating while on vacation can help cleanse these pores, as well as slough off any dullness to leave your skin rejuvenated and glowing. Similarly, consider lightening your makeup routine when traveling. Leaving your pores the space to breathe is beneficial, especially when exposing them to new environments.

Sunscreen

This one might be a given, but whether you are traveling or at home, be sure to wear sunscreen! It can be tempting to forgo it while in the sun to give yourself an extra glow, but changes in scenery can mean changes in UV levels as well. No one wants to travel and come back with an unwanted sunburn as a souvenir; wear sunscreen, and your skin will thank you kindly!
