Our Favorite Tips for Desert Skincare

Living in any harsh climate can take a toll on the skin.  The Mojave Desert has an incredibly high UV index almost year round, making it difficult to achieve that healthy and hydrated glow more easily gained elsewhere.  However, with a rise in accessibility to information and the evolution of products that target such issues, it is now easier than ever to do so.  Here are a few of our favorite tips for desert skincare; with proper practice, they can be utilized to help sustain nourished, glowing skin no matter where you are.

Hydration

It goes without saying, but having proper hydration of the body is the first step to having properly hydrated skin.  The skin is our body’s largest organ, and it is often a reflection of how the body is operating on the inside.  Opinions may vary on the necessary amount of water to consume in a day, but the biggest thing is to listen to your body, considering your activity levels and what it needs.  Aiming to drink at least a liter per day is a good start.

Sunscreen

Using a quality sunscreen daily is an essential part of the desert skincare routine. The UV index is much higher here than other places, and we lack the natural elements of shade found in other climates.  Skincare technology has come a long way in recent years; there are now a wide range of facial sunscreens on the market designed to accommodate any skin type or issue.  Dermatologists recommend ensuring that whichever sunscreen you use has an SPF of at least 30.

Humectant Ingredients

Using products that contain the proper ingredients is key to successful desert skincare. For example, it is important to incorporate ingredients that act as humectants into your routine; these help create a barrier atop the skin to trap moisture inside.  Such ingredients help preserve hydration deep within the layers of the skin, rather than just the uppermost layers.  Some common skincare ingredients that work as humectants include Gluconolactone, Castor Seed Oil, and Sodium Hyaluronate

Lip Balm

Everyone is often so focused on the face that we tend to forget the importance of lip care as well.  The skin of the lips is especially delicate and susceptible to growing chapped due to desert winds and lack of humidity.  Keeping a natural, nourishing balm handy is a crucial element in maintaining healthy lips, not to mention a beautiful smile!

Mist

Misting is an easy, refreshing way to add moisture to the skin throughout the day.  Facial mists are generally lightweight formulas that contain anti-inflammatory ingredients to soothe the skin; they are particularly helpful for those with sensitive skin or conditions such as eczema.  Further, facial mists are often sold in travel-sized bottles that can easily be packed for on-the-go use.

There is little that compares to the sheer beauty and magic of a desert rainfall. At Mojave Desert Skin Shield, we aim to encapsulate this energy within our Organic Chaparral Protective Mist formula. This blend of hydrosols and nourishing oils is excellent for quenching even the driest, most parched skin. Organic Chaparral Protective Mist is reminiscent of desert summer showers; a refreshing component in any desert skincare routine.
